12 - already?

 I can't believe Jake is 12.  I'm not sure where the time went. He is turning into a fine young man and I'm so proud of him.  He's a great example to our family.

Since Jake's birthday was on Saturday, he got to plan the day, dinner, and dessert. I wasn't surprised when he decided he wanted to spend the day at the lake.

We  were finally able to take the boat out (thanks Daddy).  The kids had a blast jumping off and swimming around.

  Mom and Dad brought an old yellow rubber raft from Grandpa's.  We tied a rope to it and then around the tree. The kids played in it for hours!

It reminded me of this time... Joleane and I rowing Grandpa around.

For dinner, we had smoked ribs, baked potatoes, and French bread.  Followed by ice cream cake for dessert.

Then it was present time - A fishing pole with a camera!

Last Day of School - umm, maybe not

Here is the obligatory Last Day of School post to compare the 1st Day of School.

Just when I was finally getting around to post the end of the year pics, Steve called and said he needed some "help" at the farm.  He was quiet, stumbling over his words and not quite sure what he needed or was asking for.  Finally, he spit it out - Copper was about to have a calf.  Yes, this is the same cow that surprised us this time last year.

I called the vet, he told us what to do ("wait and see"), then I headed up there.  As things seem to go for us, a storm was blowing in.  Steve and I sat in the car, hid behind the truck, anything we could do to get out of the wind and waited.  We didn't actually have to wait too long.  within 45 minutes, Copper had delivered (unassisted) a healthy heifer.  Soon after, it started pouring buckets of rain, hail, and whatever else blew in.

To go along with Roscoe, Moonshine, Dipstick, Daisy, and Cooter - we named the calf LuLu.  She is healthy, happy, and very cute.  The kids can't wait to start playing with her.  She is just about a week old now.

Now, back to the the Last Day of School - wait, phone is ringing... it is the neighbors... they just bought 8 little pigs at the auction.

Wednesday after Steve's work meetings (8pm) we headed to the farm and rearranged animals.  Copper and Lulu needed their pen fixed (diesel had push his way through to get to the "good" hay), Goats got the boot out of the kennel, kennel walls were moved to make a temporary pig pen, and then a new goat pen was built.  

The Leschinsky clan helped out - Sasha is quite the builder.  She is faster with the hammer then Steve's reflexes!

...when you have boxes - everywhere! Here's a couple pics...

Well, Steve and the kids made their 3rd trip to Oregon to bring "stuff" to Colorado in preparation for Nana and Papa's big move.  The road trip out generally goes pretty smooth and the make good time.  They leave about 5am and get to Klamath around 11pm.  I pack them all kinds of snacks, drinks, lunchables, activity bags, movies... everything to keep them entertained and fed.  (I stay home so I can take care of the dogs, cats, chickens, goats, chicks, cows - the farm!)

The trips home however is when the adventure and action happens.  Trip number 1 - kids are sick and throwing up.  Trip number 2 - lost a dresser in the 1st two hours of the trip. Trip 3 - where do I start? 

Let's just start with a phone call I received Sunday evening (7-8pm maybe) saying the trailer has a flat tire in Morgan, Utah. After a couple minutes of being speechless and not really knowing what to do or where to start, I turned to my friend Google and found a tow company that had a driver in Morgan and could bring Steve some air.  The goal was to get him to Evanston (still several hours away) where he could get a new tire.  Let me just say how crazy it is that truck stops don't carry tires or have repair shops.  Walmart is open 24/7, but not the tire shop. Skipping lots of details... they have to stay in Evanston Sunday. 

Monday morning brings new light to the situation and Steve calls to say he probably needs at least 3 new tires.  Well, Memorial Day didn't help our search for tires.  I called Walmart and hoped that the guy who helped the night before was just really clueless and that maybe a real "tire guy" could help.  I was in luck - they did have the tires Steve needed and the trailer rims weren't reversible or whatever the guy said they were the night before. Walmart was able to help (after working around their policies) and they were on the road by 9:30am.

End of the story - everyone made it home and were excited to be out of the truck.  

We unloaded the trailer Tuesday night since we were expecting rain on Wednesday.  What in the world are we going to do with all these boxes?

Think before you drink!

The end of the school year means projects. Math projects, reading projects, science projects, history projects, etc.  I enjoy the kid's projects and the opportunity to reflect on what they have learned over the past year... OK, who am I kidding.  Projects are a pain in the butt!!  

Jake needed to come up with a science project idea.  We talked through a lot of ideas, and settled on one that would help him understand nutrition better for wrestling, track, school, or whatever activity he is doing. Here's his project...

HYPOTHESIS

I think that sugar does affect your concentration and reaction time because sugar gets you up and awake.

PROCEDURE (short version)

First thing in the morning (before eating or drinking)

Day 1 Base test results

Repeat Reaction and Concentration test every 15 min. for 45 min. and record results

Day 2  Drink 10 ounces Orange Juice

Repeat Reaction and Concentration test every 15 min. for 45 min. and record results

Day 3 Drink 10 ounces of Strawberry Milk

Repeat Reaction and Concentration test every 15 min. for 45 min. and record results

Day 4 Drink 10 ounces Powerade

Repeat Reaction and Concentration test every 15 min. for 45 min. and record results

Day 5 Drink 10 ounces Root Beer soda

CONCLUSION

Yes, sugar does affect our concentration and reaction time. My hypothesis is I think sugar can affect concentration and reaction time because sugar gets you up and awake, which happened a tiny bit to me.  

My average base time for the reaction test was 0.361 seconds. Strawberry milk had 38 grams of sugar in the 10 ounces I drank. My average reaction time after the strawberry was 0.449 seconds.  My reaction time increased by 0.088 seconds.
This project showed me that sugar does impact reaction and concentration times.  This applies in real life because your school tests and grades can be impacted.  We should not drink sugary drinks before school and classes where we need to concentrate.  This science project could be improved by repeating the tests multiple days and adding additional people to do the tests.

My average base time for the concentration test was 1 minute and 27 seconds. Strawberry milk had 38 grams of sugar in the 10 ounces I drank. My average concentration test time after the strawberry was 2 minute and 3 seconds.  My reaction time increased by 0.36 seconds.

I'm really proud pf Jake and all the work he put into his project.  He did an excellent job and got 99/100.  (His conclusion was a little out of order)

MaKenna's Piano Recital

MaKenna has been taking piano lessons for a couple months.  Here is a video from last month of her first recital.

Well the last post was the middle of April, we had just gotten Gloria and it was snowing the beginning of each week.  Six weeks have passed and a lot has happened. Where do I start? The bees, the chicks, track, school projects, piano recital, the list goes on...

A - April
April showers bring May flowers for most folks, for us it brings mud.

B - Bees
Every farmer who is allergic to bees (Steve) or scared of bees (Jake) should have some anyways. Steve's manager and another guy at work have bees and when guys get talking... we ended up with 2 hives.  We've just started and it takes a long time to get any honey, but I can't wait for all the fruit we get.  We had some fruit trees from last year and planted at least a dozen more.  How many do you need for an "orchard"?

C - Chicks
Spring time on the farm (and at the farm stores) means babies.  I had to stop at the farm store one Saturday afternoon and had the kids with me.  You can see where this is going... We have 5 new baby chicks.  Why 5 you ask.  Well, I told each of the kids they could pick 1.  MaKenna and Kyler each picked the same kind which meant they were siblings. Jake picked a different kind.  His chick would have been lonely if he didn't get another one - that gave us 4, but also left just 1 at the store.  We can't have a lonely chick, so we had to get it too.

D - Dad
Steve's Birthday was the beginning of May.  The kids made him Choc Chip muffins for breakfast and used his Dukes of Hazzard tray to bring it to him in bed.

E - Eaton

May 5th we got up early and went to Eaton, a small town east of us.  The were going to implode the old Sugar Factory.  I thought it might be pretty cool to go watch it.  It didn't exactly turn out like we (or the City for that matter) was expecting, but none the less, it was fun. (The water tower, smoke stack, and some of the center of the building tumbled).  The town webpage has a good video that you can watch.  It took them all day and several tries to get it down.

F - Four H & Fair

For 4-H this year, MaKenna is in cake decorating.  She has to make 3 cakes before the fair.  She has to keep records of how much she spent, what kind she made, what she learned, etc.  This was the 1st one she did.  O, and it has to be decorated with candy, or other edible items.  The boys couldn't be left out, so they also decorated a cake.

This time of year mean graduations - high school, middle school, kindergarten, etc.  We had 1 high school graduation invite and 1 middle school invite.  These are the gifts I put together (I love pinterest!)
